Home visiting

Recently, Cambodia has experienced an outbreak of disease which has caused the deaths of around 6o Cambodian children. Reports from the World Health Organisation suggest the disease is the EV71 virus, which is a common cause of hand, foot and mouth disease. Typically this only causes cold like symptoms, but in rare cases it can lead to severe neurological disease. There is no treatment for the virus, but proper hygiene can prevent infection spreading, so the Cambodian government shut down all schools and education centres for a few weeks to help prevent the virus spreading.

This meant that Serve Cambodia’s education centres were also closed, so teachers and support workers used their time to visit the homes of the students. They were able to check on the well being of the children, promote good hygiene and also use the time to encourage the families. The staff visited many homes and listened to what everyone had to say. They learnt more about the family situations of the children they work with and the needs of their families.  This was a great way to build stronger relationships with the families, particularly with the parents and grandparents.

We are so grateful that God protected both the children who attend the education centres and the children of Fellowship of Hope’s churches, and also that the staff were able to use this opportunity to show God’s love to the communities in which they work.

September is a very exciting month for Serve Cambodia supporters in Western Australia, as Pastor Sara, Pastor Vuthy, TLC Manager – Phanna, and Community Development Manager – Meng will be visiting Perth to say thanks to supporters there, and further promote the amazing work God is doing through Serve Cambodia and Fellowship of Hope.

We would love for you to be able to meet these guys so we’re sending you a list of the public events they will be attending so that you can have a chance to come along!

The first event is a Supporter’s Dinner at Duncraig Christian Fellowship at 7pm on Saturday 1st September. The cost for the dinner is $20 for adults and $15 for children. An invitation is attached to this email. If you will be attending you will need to RSVP to by 24th August so that we know how many to cater for!

The guys will also be speaking at 4 different churches while in Perth. These are:

* Mount Hawthorn Baptist – 2 services – 8.30am & 10.30am Sunday 2nd September. You’ll find the church on the corner of Edinboro & Hobart Streets in Mount Hawthorn.

* Lynwood Christian Church – 9.30am Sunday 2nd September. You’ll find the church at 32 Latham Road in Ferndale.

* Bedford Community Church – 9.30am Sunday 9th September. You’ll find the church at 261 Coode Street in Bedford.

* Duncraig Christian Fellowship – 9.15am Sunday 9th September. You’ll find the church at 41 Beddi Road Duncraig.

And for those who are sporty, or want somewhere to take the kids for a play while catching up with our Cambodian team at the same time, we’re holding a social soccer day (BYO afternoon tea) at Perth Bible College – 1 College Court, Karrinyup. The event will be held on Saturday 8th September from 1 to 4pm on the playing field at the rear of the campus.

We would love to see you at one or more of these events! This will be a great opportunity to put faces to the work you are such a key part of through your support. It will also be an opportunity to hear more about what’s happening in Cambodia from those who are doing the work on the ground there.

We look forward to seeing you!
